Hale County was created on Jan. 30, 1867 and formed from Greene County, Marengo County, Perry County, and Tuscaloosa County.. This particular county was named in honor of Stephen Fowler Hale (1816–1862), lieutenant colonel in Confederate States Army killed at Gaines' Mill, Virginia.
